The Department of Environment is now identifying possible environmental impacts following the collapse of a sewer line at the bridge in four miles.
Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Praveen Bala said this measure is taken to address any related environmental issues including water and marine life contamination that will arise from the discharge of raw sewer into nearby rivers, streams and creeks.
Bala said his staff are on the ground assessing and monitoring the situation and providing daily updates.
He added that they are also working closely with relevant agencies including the Water Authority of Fiji who are also working around the clock to address the situation.
People have been advised to refrain from using the river and also the beaches and coastal areas from Nadawa to Suva Point and are not to collect marine food from these areas since they will be highly contaminated and unsafe for human consumption until further notice
