The current backlog of workers compensation now stands at 15 compared to 2,201 in 2009.
This has been confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for Employment Salaseini Daunabuna while opening a training course to boost the number of medical assessors in the country.
Daunabuna says the Ministry has also been able to settle 97% of these cases and they receive an average of 900 new cases every year.
An occupational medicine specialist from Sydney Doctor Dwight Dowda will be conducting the phase 1 training on the Evaluation of Impairment for Medical Practitioners.
Daunabuna says that the essential contributions by Dr Dowda have made significant progress towards Fiji’s Workers Compensation Reform which is earmarked as the last component of the Labor Reform.
She says this means that cases are quickly and professionally assessed by doctors and compensation is paid out speedily by employers to injured workers and family dependents.
Daunabuna says the manual ‘Fiji Workcare Guides for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment’ will give Fiji comfort in the assessing of the Workers Compensation cases and its positive effect towards the backlog of cases.
The training is being attended by thirty medical professionals from around the country.
