Minister for Civil Aviation Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they need to critically review the indicators used for the global market based measures to determine the reduction in aviation carbon emissions.
This was highlighted by Sayed‑Khaiyum while speaking to the Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Senior Officials of the Pacific at the Pacific Aviation Ministers Meeting in Nadi.
He says they believe a holistic approach needs to be taken into account and the total amount of carbon emission footprint should be considered, not only from a particular industry.
Sayed-Khaiyum says although the Pacific Island countries are the least emitters of carbon we are at the forefront of adverse climate conditions.
He says many Pacific Island countries have to spend a vast amount of money in terms of climate adaptation which includes the building of sea walls and infrastructure.
