Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald has decided to launch a criminal investigation into the death of one of the suspects involved in the robbery at the City Foreign Exchange in Nadi on Friday.
Groenewald said that the same senior officer who initially investigated this matter will continue as lead investigator on the criminal case.
He added that at this stage, they cannot release the details of privileged evidence.
The Police Commissioner said that under his leadership, the Fiji Police Force will not tolerate any misconduct by its officers.
Groenewald said that the man’s family deserves to see justice for what happened to their son and he is determined to see this done.
Meanwhile the NGO Coalition on Human Rights Chair, Shamima Ali said every individual, no matter what the crime they have been charged with, is entitled to a fair trial and no one deserves to die in such a manner.
Ali urges the Fiji Police Force to act with transparency and accountability in its investigations into the allegations.
The OneFiji Party said it wishes to record its sadness at the news of the death of Vilikesa Soko whilst in the custody of the police.
Party General Secretary, Sitiveni Kalou said OneFiji notes that the Commissioner of Police has assured the nation that a thorough investigation will be carried out into the circumstances surrounding Soko’s death.
He welcomes this undertaking and looks forward to its timely conclusion and the public release of findings.
