55-year-old retired military officer Wame Waqavanua charged with causing the death of 23-year-old Watisoni Rokosau from Raiwaqa has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates Court.
Waqavanua appeared before Magistrate Waleen George yesterday.
Defence lawyer Filimoni Vosarogo requested the court for bail but Magistrate George said this is an indictable offence and the case should be transferred to the High Court.
She said the judge who would preside over the case when it is transferred to the High Court will have to deal with the request for bail.
Magistrate George has placed the matter for first call before the Suva High Court on the 4th of December at 9am.
Watisoni Rokosau was arrested as a suspect at the Raiwaqa Police Station on Monday morning in an alleged case of damaging property.
Rokosau was taken for medical treatment when he was brought in by police officers.
He was admitted in hospital and passed away on Tuesday.
It is alleged that Rokosau was intoxicated and damaged Waqavanua’s property.
Police have said that none of the police officers were involved in the assault.
