A couple from Leeds, UK were in desperate need of O negative blood after they were involved in a car crash in Lautoka.
Victoria Blee and Daniel Mendoza were both in need of O negative blood after the injuries sustained in the crash, and a relative put up a plea on social media for blood donation and claimed there was a shortage of blood from the O negative group in Fiji.
Fijivillage contacted the Ministry of Health and Medical Services about the request on social media.
The ministry responded, saying the Blood Bank team at the Lautoka Hospital were in constant communication with Blood Donor Services to arrange for the O negative, which is a rare blood group among our local pool of donors.
It says through their prompt actions, the Blood Bank Officers have secured the blood and the team were able to get additional blood units and transfusions were done.
The team at Lautoka Hospital are currently providing the required medical care and supervision for the recovery of the patients.
