There are about 310 midwives in Fiji and continuos training is essential to make up for the shortage of Health Workers and specialist skills such as midwives.
This was highlighted by the Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar during the celebration of the International Day for Midwives 2015.
Bhatnagar says the roles of midwives could be very challenging in a developing country like Fiji as CWM hospital alone caters for about 8 thousand deliveries per year and one to 2,500 ratio of midwives is not enough.
She says that the Ministry will take into consideration to train at least 40 midwives per year for the next five years to reach the ultimate goal that all birthing units are manned by qualified midwives.
