The Consumer Council of Fiji has raised concerns that they have received complaints regarding some barber shops in Lautoka reusing the same razor blade on two or more consumers.
Council CEO, Premila Kumar says the Council found out that three out of five barber shops monitored were seen not changing the razor blade after using it on a customer.
Kumar says the Council is concerned that these barber shops are not following the proper hygiene standards and are putting the consumers health at risk.
She says the reality is that just with an infected razor blade, a customer can contract infections like HIV and Hepatitis B and C.
Also, fungal infections and nits and lice can be easily transferred from one head to another if the same blade is reused on different customers.
The Council is urging the municipal councils around the country to keep a close eye on barber and hairstyling shops to ensure that they are keeping up with regular hygiene practices.
Lautoka City Council CEO, Jone Nakauvadra says they are monitoring the shops to ensure they follow the rules while dealing with customers.
Nakauvadra says shop owners are issued notices if they do not follow the rules. Their business license can also be cancelled.
