The Consumer Council of Fiji says they need to be given the legal mandate to be involved in class actions.
Council CEO Premila Kumar says a class action is something that the council needs so that they can take necessary legal action against traders that are not following regulations.
Kumar says the rights of the consumers needs to be heard and if this legal mandate is given, it will further strengthen consumer protection in the country and give confidence in the market place.
Kumar says consumer protection is of great significance both as part of a sound business approach as well as for achieving the broader goal of national economic growth.
She says consumer protection is all about honest businesses and consumers up against the dishonest businesses.
