The General Secretary of the Confederation of Public Sector Unions Rajeshwar Singh says inefficiency in the civil service is nothing new and civil servants should not get penalized by having term contracts and performance based pay increments.
Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has continued to stress that civil service appointments will be made on merit and pay increments will be based on performance to ensure that civil servants improve their level of efficiency.
Fijivillage has raised the question with the Confederation of Public Sector Unions whether they are concerned about the effective use of tax dollars allocated in the National Budget to ensure that the best and most efficient civil service delivery is provided to the people of the country.
Fijivillage questioned Rajeshwar Singh why the public sector unions do not want the term contracts and the performance based pay increments, Singh said that the issue regarding civil service delivery has been there for years just like other countries.
Singh says they want the government to talk to the public sector unions before they do anything concerning the civil servants.
The public sector unions are planning to go on strike after taking a strike ballot from September 25th to October 6th.
The votes will then be counted and if they have more than 50% of the members saying yes to strike, then they will go on strike next month after giving 14 days notice.
The unions have 14,000 members in total.
There are about 29,000 civil servants in the country.
