Traffic was chaotic in many parts of Suva and along the Suva to Nausori corridor from yesterday afternoon to about 11pm last night.
Several areas were grid-locked as major works by the Water Authority of Fiji at Nokonoko Road and along Ratu Mara Road near RSMS and QEB in Nabua caused the worst traffic jam ever seen in the Suva to Nausori corridor.
The traffic worsened as many people also headed towards the Vodafone Arena for the Hibiscus Festival.
Some people who caught the bus from the Suva Bus Stand just after 6pm arrived on the main road near Valelevu in more than 2 and a half hours.
Many people who were driving just from Shop and Save Nabua to lower Mead Road were stuck in traffic for more than 45 minutes.
We have questioned the Water Authority of Fiji about the works done at the two sites.
They say the Nokonoko Road repair work was urgent as it was a burst water main and it was affecting supply to Nadera residents. The problem has been fixed and traffic should be flowing along the road from today.
The Water Authority is also digging a big trench along Ratu Mara Road near QEB. They say that they are trying to lay double 375mm waste water pipes to avoid future waste leakage.
This is expected to be completed in a month’s time. We will have more later today.
