“Fiji is one of the closest and strongest allies of India and celebrating India’s 70th Republic Day in Fiji is very special and significant.”
These were the sentiments of India’s High Commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal while speaking at the 70th Republic Day celebrations today at India House in Suva.
Sapkal says the relationship between Fiji and India is very important even though there is a distance of almost 12,000km between the two countries.
Sapkal revealed that they would like to assist with Fiji’s railway links as well for faster transportation of sugarcane as well as see how it can be used for tourism purposes, and for cargo transportation.
He says sugar industry cooperation is going really well and at present there are 20 Fijians who are receiving training in India to help boost the sugar industry.
Meanwhile, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Vijay Nath thanked the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji for their commitment and support towards Fiji.
Nath thanked Sapkal for their support towards education in Fiji and says he hopes the bond between the two countries continues to grow stronger.
India’s Republic Day celebrations began with the flag hoisting ceremony and included dance performances and singing.
