National Advisor Non-Communicable Diseases Dr. Isimeli Tukana has confirmed that the four major types of non‑communicable diseases are cardio‑vascular disease, diabetes, cancers and chronic respiratory disease.
Cardio-vascular disease is the most common type of NCD in the country.
The Health Ministry has revealed that last year it had spent a total of $160,000 to support a total of 32 patients for open heart surgeries.
The Ministry has also revealed that around $US151,897 was spent to facilitate overseas treatment for 33 patients, this included urgent need of highly risk cardiac surgeries.
It has been revealed that 1,869 amputations were done between 2014 and 2016.
835 were females and 1,034 were males who had lower limb amputations.
Dr Tukana has stressed that a healthy lifestyle is important now more than ever before, especially with the ever increasing rate of non‑communicable diseases in Fiji.
