Cane cutter gets over 9 years for raping his 12yr old niece

A 41-year-old cane cutter of Tavua has been sentenced to nine years eleven months for raping his 12-year-old niece four years ago.

While sentencing him, Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Sudharshana De Silva said that this is a serious breach of trust by the man towards his niece.

Judge De Silva also highlighted that the victim is of young age and the age gap is about 26 years.

The court heard that the victim was returning home from school when the incident took place.

In 2014, upon enquiries from the family members, the victim then told her parents about the incident.

The man will not be eligible for parole until he completes serving 8 years of his sentence.
