The Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council has welcomed the decision made by the Fiji Sugar Corporation to compensate cane growers whenever there are unplanned mill break-downs for over 6 hours.
In a statement the Council’s Chief Executive Officer Sundresh Chetty says the Council has met with the Executives of FSC in Lautoka and requested to ensure that the issue of mill breakdowns is minimized.
Chetty says they understand that it takes time to settle down at the initial start-up period, but this should not become a norm.
He says the growers incur huge costs in accommodating and feeding the cutters when this happens.
Chetty also highlighted that the council is looking forward to a successful harvesting and crushing season and is urging growers to consistently supply fresh green cane to the mill.
