The United States of America Deputy Secretary of State William Burns has commended Fiji’s recent general election and the way it was conducted.
Deputy Secretary Burns highlighted this at a meeting with 14 Pacific Islands Developing States leaders and representatives in New York last week.
At the meeting that was held at the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, Deputy Secretary Burns commended Fiji’s contribution to the peacekeeping process across the world.
Burns said they are pleased to see the positive steps Fiji took with its historic election.
In response, the Fijian Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola thanked Burns for the 30 election monitors provided to the Multinational Observer Group, who reported that the 2014 election was conducted in a “fair, transparent and democratic manner”.
Minister Kubuabola also thanked the US for its assistance towards climate change, capacity building and its recent announcement on assistance on oceans protection and development.
