The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an NGO, Animals Fiji aimed at improving veterinary services and animal disease reporting in Fiji.

Authority’s Executive Chairman, Xavier Khan says the major area of focus will be household pets and enhancing animal welfare in Fiji.

Khan says the MOU signing with Animals Fiji is extremely crucial and beneficial in improving disease reporting and also to reduce the chances of zoonotic diseases being spread such as rabies.

He adds that good animal welfare needs disease prevention and appropriate veterinary treatment, shelter, management and nutrition, humane handling and humane slaughter or killing.

Meanwhile, Co-Founder and Managing Trustee of Animals Fiji, Casey Quimby says the MOU between BAF and Animals Fiji is a huge opportunity for working towards the same goal of improving and preserving Fiji’s environment and resources.

Quimby says this is done for the betterment of humans and animals.
