Commissioner of Police, Sitiveni Qiliho has made an urgent call for people to be security conscious while moving around cities and towns around the country and report any suspicious cases of opportunists.
The call is being made by Qiliho following the resurfacing of cases where people are being mugged, attacked and robbed in the capital city especially at nights with the latest case being of a man who was returning from work and was brutally assaulted at the Suva Foreshore.
The Commissioner says opportunists are loitering around looking at areas where they can exploit to their advantage and he calls on the public to avoid loitering in isolated areas.
Qiliho also says that while police are moving around trying to get those people, the opportunists are also observing.
He says that they are also encouraging business owners to put up surveillance cameras and help curb the issue.
The Commissioner adds they are aware that culprits are also trying to find out when Police are doing change of duties and that is when they carry out their attacks.
When asked about the discussion between Police, Suva City Council and Suva Retailers Association on putting up CCTV Cameras around Suva City, Qiliho says that it is a continuing discussion and while they are looking at other options, financing and other issues will need to be dealt with.
