The parliament session yesterday ended in a heated debate with Minister for Housing Parveen Bala calling Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula a culprit for creating squatters in this country.
The statement was then withdrawn by the Minister.
The heated exchange happened after Nawaikula made an end of the week statement on the formalisation of Informal Settlements in Fiji.
Nawaikula accused the government of using squatters for vote buying and also raised concerns about what he said was a housing crisis which was raising insecurity.
Nawaikula adds that people living in informal settlements were not being granted their right under the 2013 Constitution saying it was a rubbish constitution.
He also said that there should be better screening for people that apply to live at Lagilagi Housing.
In his response, Minister for Housing Parveen Bala questioned why Nawaikula has decided to bring this issue up now after more than 3 years.
Bala then called Nawaikula a culprit claiming that the Opposition MP has been misleading people in informal settlements.
The Minister for Housing was then told by the Speaker of Parliament Doctor Jiko Luveni to withdraw the statement against Nawaikula.
Parliament has been adjourned to the 22nd of June for the 2018/2019 National Budget announcement.
