BSP has today hosted its Biggest Morning Tea to kick start its annual series of Cancer Awareness fundraisers for this year.
Fiji Cancer Society Board Member, Makrava Wilson says that according to the Ministry of Health, there are 1,100 new cases of cancer every year with an average of 700 people dying annually due to some form of cancer.
Wilson says of these deaths, more than 50% are found to be breast and cervical cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.
Present at the event ,registered nurse Marica Naigulevu has called for support in the area of palliative care.
Naigulevu says this is the last line of care for patients with incurable diseases where they try to relieve their suffering and support them through the final stages of their life.
Fiji Cancer Society has recognized the need for better care for patients in their final stages and today announced plans to launch a new palliative program in 2019.
