The Australian government has provided about $1.1 million to Fiji Red Cross Society’s Building Resilient Fiji Project through their Fiji Community Development Program.
While launching the Fiji Red Cross Society’s Building Resilient Fiji Project, Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Margaret Twomey highlighted that this project aims to ensure that Fijians are better prepared to respond and to recover from disasters.
Twomey says the support will enable the Fiji Red Cross Society to pre-position dignity kits, hygiene kits, household packs and shelter kits that will benefit more than seventy thousand people across all four divisions.
She says the Fiji Red Cross Society will be able to repair some of its existing storage facilities in Pacific Harbor and Rakiraki, expand storage spaces and offices in Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Labasa, Bua, Korovou, Lautoka and Tavua.
Towmey says for the first time the Society will be able to build new office and storage facilities in the maritime islands of Koro, Vanuabalavu, Rabi, Kadavu, Lakeba and Rotuma.
Meanwhile, Minister for National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu thanked the Australian government for their assistance.
He says it is a substantial assistance that will also complement the work government is doing in the divisions in disaster preparedness and in mitigation of the effects of climate change.
