Six new infant warmers were donated to the CWM hospital by the Australian High Commission today in an effort to reduce infant and premature deaths.
During the handover this morning, Australian High Commissioner Margaret Twomey said many deaths in babies takes place because the infants cannot maintain enough body temperature on their own especially when they are prematurely born.
Twomey said the infant warmers are designed to address this problem.
Apart from the new infant warmers, laboratory testing equipment worth $280,000 was handed to the Hospital and the laboratory was also refurbished.
Twomey added that with the dengue outbreak late last year in Fiji, the new lab equipment such as Media Preparator and bacteria Alert Chamber will enable the Ministry of Health to accurately identify cases like typhoid and dengue fever, ensuring that patients receive timely care.
