The Australia government has committed $20 million to rebuild and repair over 30 schools that were damaged in Tropical Cyclone Winston.
This is in addition to 16 schools where repair works are currently underway or have been completed.
Australian High Commission Spokesperson says the Australia’s school rebuilding program includes Koro High School, several primary schools in Koro Island and 12 schools in Ra.
Schools that will be rebuilt or repaired in Ra includes Barotu Primary School, Bayly Memorial Primary School, Bucalevu Primary School, Bureiwai District School, Liwativale Primary School, Madhuvani Primary School, Namuaniwaqa Village School, Naroko Primary School, Nasau District School, Navunibitu Catholic School, Tokaimalo District School and Vatukacevaceva Village School.
Rebuilding works on over 30 schools will begin later this year after the full needs of each school are understood and contracting of builders is complete.
According to the Spokesperson, the work is expected to be completed over the next year but this will depend on the availability of building contractors, materials and design approvals.
The spokesperson says they will work as quickly as they can to complete the work, so that children can return to a safe and comfortable learning environment.
