Assessors find 5 suspended police officers and a soldier guilty of rape and sexual assault

Five suspended police officers Penaia Drauna, Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu and Senitiki Natakasavu, and soldier Pita Matairavula who were charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault in the Vilikesa Soko case have been found guilty by the four assessors in the Lautoka High Court.

The case is in relation to the alleged rape and sexual assault of Vilikesa Soko and Senijeli Boila in August 2014.

Soko also died in custody.

Three suspended police officers Manasa Talala, Seruvi Caqusau and Kelevi Sewatu who were charged with two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault of Vilikesa Soko and Senijeli Boila, have been found not guilty by the four assessors.

The other five suspended police officers and soldier were found not guilty in relation to the charge of rape and sexual assault of Senijeli Boila.

Manasa Talala and Viliame Vereivalu who were also charged with defeating the course of justice have been found not guilty by the assessors.

Lautoka High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge will deliver his judgement this Friday.
