Around 120 University of the South Pacific students held a vigil last night in remembrance of the victims that were killed in the terrorist attack in Christchurch last Friday.
The students lit 50 candles with tears in their eyes as they say that it feels like the catastrophic event just happened next door. The candles represented the 50 innocent lives that were lost under the pretext of hatred and terrorism.
The students say unity starts from us if we stand together to respect each other's race, religion and culture to provide a environment of peace and harmony.
The students to show their solidarity marched from the Aus‑aid Theatre to the Oceania Centre Pavilion to emphasize the importance of multiculturalism and that no race and culture is superior than the other.
Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand, Halia Haddad, President of Government of Republic of Kiribati, Taneti Maaumau, First Lady Mrs Mauumau, the Vice‑Chancellor of USP Pal Ahluwalia and the representative from the Fiji Council of Churches Reverend James Bhagwan were also part of the vigil.
