People continue to present diabetes at a very late stage which is a major concern.
Diabetes Fiji President Dr Wahid Khan says amputation rates in Fiji is very high and according to a three‑year survey conducted by Diabetes Fiji, 938 amputations were performed at CWM Hospital, from 2010 to 2012.
Dr Khan says with diabetes being the biggest contributor to the high amputation rates, one out of every eight patients who had an amputation were not aware that they were diabetic.
He says the patients are coming at a late stage so amputation has to be done to save the life of the patient.
Dr Khan is calling on members of the public to visit their health centres to have their sugar tested and get screened at least three times a month.
