An intensive eight week stray dog control program is now being coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, the Fiji Police Force, local municipalities and animal welfare organisations beginning this week.
This is after a 2 year old girl seriously injured after stray dogs attacked her in their compound at Narewa in Nadi last Friday.
Minister for Agriculture Doctor Mahendra Reddy says they will be using control methods like baiting and trapping, desexing, education and awareness as well as licensing and registration.
He says currently in Fiji, trapping is done in public areas while baiting is used on farms or isolated areas.
Reddy is asking people to support the work of the Ministry in trying to control stray dogs by not tampering with dog traps and releasing trapped dogs.
