The Fiji Cancer Society will need close to $30 million for the next five years to have a full cancer unit in Fiji.
Fiji Cancer Society’s Vice President Phillip Low says Fiji does not have cancer experts, radiotherapy system and modern medicines which can increase the number of cure in cancer patients.
Low says Fiji currently uses chemotherapy which is not very advanced.
He says to encourage people to have their screening done there is need to increase the awareness programs in the country.
Low says through Pinktober, Bushells morning tea and contributions form relevant NGO’s and businesses they were able to collect more than $100,000 last year.
According to the Health Ministry statistics 4,742 cases of cancer were recorded between 2010 to 2013 in Fiji.
