About 230 inmates of the Fiji Corrections Service are dispatched daily to harvest sugarcane in different sectors in the West and North.
Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Jo Kulinidilo says that a total of 12,171.34 tonnes of sugar have so far been harvested in Ba, Lautoka, Rakiraki and Labasa with Labasa having the highest cane harvested of 6536.07 tonnes.
Kulinidilo says that the Corrections Service will continue to work with Government, the Ministry of Sugar and the Fiji Sugar Corporation to address the issue of the lack of manpower in harvesting sugar.
Meanwhile, Manager of the Sugar Cane Growers Council Nemani Veikoso says the inmates have done a great job in assisting farmers as it is more efficient than the ordinary labourers.
Veikoso says that a normal days production is usually around 11 tonnes however the inmates produce more than this with a record harvest of 20.68 tonnes.
Meanwhile Kulinidilo says that since the sugar industry is the backbone of the Fijian economy, they are happy to assist the industry in boosting our economy.
