Close to 1.5 million tonnes of sugar cane is expected to be harvested around Fiji this year.
This is revealed by Fiji Sugar Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Abdul Khan.
Khan says 170,000 tonnes of sugar will be produced this year.
He says that the total crop is lower than last year because of the damage caused by the Tropical Cyclone.
According to Khan, last year just over 221,000 tonnes of sugar was produced from 1.85 million tonnes of sugar cane.
Khan also highlights that the Labasa Sugar Mill has produced 14,600 tonnes of sugar so far while Lautoka Sugar mill started yesterday and Rarawai mill started their crushing today.
The CEO stresses that farmers who are taking their produce to Rarawai Mill instead of Penang Mill are being assisted well by the government which is paying for the additional costs.
However farmers can contact him if they face any difficulties.
