Serious concerns have been raised by Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on the misuse of social media in the country.
While closing the Attorney General’s conference in Natadola, Sayed-Khaiyum says that the Online Safety Act which will come into effect on the 1st of next month is to promote responsible behavior and online safety.
Sayed-Khaiyum says that when the bill was passed in Parliament, a woman from Vanua Levu had called him asking when the law will come into effect as she was concerned about how her grandmother’s nude pictures were posted online.
Sayed-Khaiyum says that when the Act comes into effect on the 1st of January people will need to read the law and become aware of the Act.
The Attorney General says that Fiji has over half a million facebook users and accessibility to facebook is quite liberal.
He also spoke about how people tend to believe anything that is posted on social media.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the Online Safety Act will also promote a safe online culture and environment that addresses cyber bullying, cyber stalking, internet trolling, exposure to offensive or harmful content particularly in respect of children.
