Minister for Economy and Civil Service, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

Minister for Economy and Civil Service, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirms that a policy shift has been made where those teachers who retire in the middle of a school term can serve till the end of the year.

He says this has been agreed to in the past couple of weeks.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they had a policy where those teachers who retired in the middle of a school term could serve till the end of the term but this has been changed because of the number of vacancies that have been created.

SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka

SODELPA MP, Viliame Gavoka also asked Sayed-Khaiyum what the government is doing about incentivizing Fijians to take up mathematics and science as Australia and New Zealand will be poaching teachers from Fiji as there is a shortage of science and mathematics teachers in those countries.

Sayed-Khaiyum says poaching has already begun and the Kiwis have already stolen a number of teachers from Fiji in the areas of science and maths.

He says they are now offering scholarships for teachers who are already within the system to upgrade themselves in specific areas.

Sayed-Khaiyum says opportunities are given to these teachers to upgrade their qualifications in the area of maths and science.
