8 police officers and a soldier plead not guilty

The 8 police officers and a soldier who have been charged with one count of rape in the Vilikesa Soko case, have all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Soko died in police custody in August 2014.

The manslaughter charge has been withdrawn and they are facing rape charges in court.

Police officers Manasa Talala, Seruvi Caqusau, Kelevi Sewatu, Penaia Drauna, Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu, Senitiki Natakasavu and soldier Pita Matairavula appeared before Justice Aruna in the Lautoka High Court yesterday.

Manasa Talala and Viliame Vereivalu are also charged with defeating the course of justice by instructing other police officers to make false statements.

The matter has been adjourned to 22nd January 2016.

Bail has been extended for eight accused persons while a Production Order has been extended for Pita Matairavula to be produced again at the next mention date.

Matairavula is currently held in custody in relation to the Iowane Benedito video brutality case.
