There were 8 cases of sexting and 234 cases of cyber bullying reported in 2017 from the primary and secondary schools in the country.
According to the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council report, there were three reported case of sexting in a primary school in Suva while there were seven cases of sexting recorded in the secondary schools in the education districts of Nausori, Nadroga/Navosa, Nadi/Lautoka/Yasawa and Eastern areas.
Sexting means sending, receiving or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs or images via cell phones, computers or other digital devices.
Some teens who have engaged in sexting have been threatened or have faced pornography charges. The consequences of sexting is school suspension for perpetrators and emotional distress with mental health conditions for victims.
Meanwhile, there were 146 cases of cyber bullying of girls in schools and 88 cases of cyber bullying of boys.
