Seven thousand people are currently employed by the forty Textile, Clothing and Footwear factories around Fiji.
This was revealed by the Ministry for Industry, Trade and Tourism Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali while handing over a grant cheque of $100,000 to the TCF Council today.
Ali says around 90% of the workers are women.
He says that the TCF sector’s exports total 100 million dollars per annum.
Ali says that with the government grant, the council will be able to promote itself to more international markets.
Meanwhile, the Council President, Kaushik Kumar says with the previous grants they were able to promote new markets in North America and Europe.
Kumar says there is a potential to do a lot more.
Fiji’s main markets are New Zealand, Australia and other Pacific Island countries.
The grant will be paid on a half yearly basis. The second half of the payment will be made in March next year.
