A 64-year-old man of Dogotuki in the Northern Division has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment after he raped a 9-year-old girl in August 2015.
While sentencing the man, Justice Chamath Morais said that the man was an immediate neighbour of the girl, and he should have protected her.
Justice Morais also said that the 64-year-old man took advantage of the girl’s vulnerability and helplessness, and exposed the innocent mind of a child to sexual activity at such a tender age.
The High Court Judge also said that the man said that he is a farmer and a fisherman. Justice Morais said that these are all personal circumstances and cannot be considered as mitigating circumstances.
A non-parole period of 9 years has been set for the 64 year old man.
