A 60-year-old woman who allegedly lured a 14-year-old girl to her house where her 60-year-old husband allegedly raped her has been granted bail by the Suva High Court.
The elderly couple appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo and while ruling on the bail application, Justice Temo says two thirds of the cases in court are rape.
He says there are 731 pending rape cases in the Lautoka High Court, 77 in the Suva High Court and 20 plus cases in the Labasa Court.
The defence lawyer told the court that according to the prosecution the woman had allegedly lured the victim by offering her money however there is no strong evidence against her.
The prosecution argued that there is a chance that the victim and the woman are related however they failed to prove it.
A stop departure order has been issued against the woman.
The 60-year-old man’s bail has been denied and he is remanded in custody.
The man is charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecently annoying any person and one count of sexual assault.
The 60‑year‑old woman is charged with aiding and abetting the offence of rape.
The alleged incident happened in Nasinu in August this year.
