A 55-year-old man has been jailed for 4 years and 10 months for sexually abusing his own niece.
It was heard in court that the girl was 11 years old at the time of the incident.
She was staying with the man because her mother had no option but to look after her daughter who was in the hospital.
The court heard that the man sexually assaulted the niece when the wife went early to the market one morning.
The man then warned her not to tell the wife.
The matter was eventually reported to police when the victim relayed the incident to her grandmother.
In his sentence, Justice Aruna Aluthge said the uncle breached the trust of this innocent victim.
The Judge said the victim’s mother trusted the man when she sent the victim to his house for care and safe custody.
A non parole period of 4 years has been set.
