The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations has processed compensation for 12 death cases from 1994 to 2016 where employers have paid out a total of $537,221.92 after the Workmen’s Compensation Act was amended.
Minister Jone Usamate revealed this after Government MP Brij Lal asked him to clarify how much has been paid for death cases by the employers under the amended act.
Usamate says that seven cases were from the government sector while five cases were from private sector.
Usamate says the Ministry is working closely with higher risk industry employers, workers and in-house occupational health and safety committees to ensure that the requirements are fulfilled.
The amended workmen’s compensation act states that the quantum for death cases has increased from $24,000 to $50,000.
Usamate says this amendment was done because of high cost of living.
