A 51-year-old man who raped his brother’s step daughter three times at their family home in the Western Division has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.
The incident happened between October 2004 and August 2006.
The victim was 13 years old when the first count of rape was committed on her.
While sentencing him Lautoka High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe highlighted that abusing of children for sexual gratification by elderly family members within the family environment needs to be addressed promptly and effectively, not only through the judicial process, but also with effective social intervention to minimise the adverse psychological and physical effect of the victim.
He will be eligible for parole after 12 years.
