It has been revealed that 50% of drivers that die from road accidents are young drivers.

A number of recommendations have been made in the traffic stakeholders meeting to safe lives on our roads.

The age limitation of private and public service drivers has been recommended after a 77-year-old man was recently involved in an accident.

It was also highlighted in the meeting that some reasons that lead to fatal accident include speeding, ignorance of law by drivers, high tech vehicles where drivers have less knowledge of the vehicle, stray animals, unattended children and drunken pedestrians.

Director Traffic, Mahesh Mishra revealed that every year they take out over 50,000 infringement notices as there are over 147,000 drivers on our roads in Fiji.

The representative from Nasinu Town Council raised concern to the Fiji Roads Authority that a number of footpaths built in Nasinu including Beaumount road is the same level as it can cause road accidents.

The Roads Authority replied that this was done to save costs.

A proposal has been made to the Land Transport Authority for photos on the driver’s license to be changed after six years to make it easy for police officers to identify drivers.
