Five businesses have been issued infringement notices by the Fiji Revenue Customs Authority for not passing on VAT reductions to consumers.
Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the five businesses have to pay the fines within 21 days.
The penalties range from $10,000 to $50,000.
The businesses issued with the notices are involved in entertainment, credit, stationary and weighbridge operations.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they are monitoring all businesses to ensure that the VAT reductions are passed on to consumers.
People can also contact the relevant authorities.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they want businesses to make profit and grow but they need to do it in the proper manner.
More businesses are expected to be issued notices by the end of this week.
36 complaints have been filed against a number of businesses.
