The repair and maintenance work for the boreholes under the government's water project is to be carried out by the communities in the area.
This is after a resident of Vatamai Road end, Lautoka raised concern that five families need water as their borehole was damaged during Cyclone Winston.
Aseefa Bibi said they have been using water from a well which has now dried.
Bibi said the five affected families have to get water from their relatives living in other areas.
Divisional Planning Officer West Sitiveni Tavaga said under the government's water project, the two third of cost of the total project is paid by the government and the one third of cost is paid by the community.
He said the community should ensure the sustainability of the project.
Meanwhile, Tavaga said they will cart water to the area if the request is made by the people.
