The grassroots 4FJ campaign to revive kawakawa and donu stocks in Fiji kicks off today.
The campaign received more than 8,500 pledges from people across the country and various sectors to potentially reduce the market by 85,000 fish each year based on Suva consumption surveys.
Founder of cChange, Scott Radway says that kawakawa and donu known as grouper have been rapidly declining over the past several decades with catches decreasing 70% in 30 years.
Radway says that it is critical that people who have pledged to maintain their commitments as they bring more people into the 4FJ movement this year.
4FJ will be working with the Fisheries department to foster greater dialogue with fishermen, fishermen associations and fish sellers as well as communities.
The kawakawa and the donu breeding months are from June to September.
