44,816 drivers have been booked for speeding between January 1st to September 20th this year.
This has been revealed by Police Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra while presenting the National Traffic Infringement Records in the LTA Consultation for National Road Safety Campaign at Tanoa Plaza.
Mishra also highlighted that to date a total of 836 drivers were arrested for drunk driving.
He says 4,974 drivers were booked for careless driving, 852 drivers were booked for improper use of mobiles, 617 were booked for failure to produce drivers license while 204 drivers were booked for driving without a license.
Mishra says that pedestrians and infrastructure are also a factor in road accidents.
Mishra says 55 road fatalities have been recorded this year compared to 48 for the same period last year.
He revealed that of the 55 deaths on our roads, 26 were caused due to speeding, 13 due to drunk driving, 5 deaths were due to pedestrians being at fault while 4 of the deaths on our roads were due to fatigue.
SSP Mishra has stressed that Police now have 4 mobile breath testers in the 4 divisions to help monitor drunk driving along with the 120 new breathalyzers that they hope will be able to help monitor, identify and eventually tackle drunk driving on our roads.
