A 38-year-old man who sexually abused his stepdaughter and niece for close to two years has been jailed for 16 years by High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.
In his sentence, Justice Goundar called the man’s actions appalling and sickening.
The man was convicted for two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
It was heard in court that the victim is the stepdaughter and niece and the sexual abuse started in 2017 when the girl was 12-years-old.
The girl lived with the man, her mother and four siblings.
The court heard that the sexual abuse continued for about 1 year 9 months until the victim reported it to her school teacher in September 2018.
Justice Goundar said the girl in her evidence in court said the uncle treated her like his wife and described her experience as painful.
The Judge said the man threatened to harm the family by poisoning their meals if the girl reported the abuse.
A non parole period of 12 years has been set.
