Two hundred and five business owners who qualified for the Small and Micro Business grants program in Nadi were today given $1,000 each from the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
While handing out the grants, Bainimarama said this is the sixth such ceremony of its kind after grant presentations in Suva, Navua, Sigatoka, Savusavu and Taveuni.
Bainimarama said this week alone, they have given out almost 900 grants and the total number has now surpassed 2,000.
Bainimarama said the present contribution of the Small and Micro Business sector to Fiji’s economy is $800 million a year.
He added instead of this being a one-off event, the Government is going to make these grants every year and fund them through the budget.
Bainimarama also said the Government can raise this contribution much higher if they can equip existing businesses and encourage other Fijians to start their own businesses.
