The upgrade works on twenty schools that sustained major damage during Tropical Cyclone Winston have been completed by the Construction and Implementation Unit with works on 148 schools currently underway.
This has been revealed by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while opening a new classroom building worth over $340,000 at Naiyala High School in Tailevu.
Bainimarama says through the Ministry of Education the government has completed minor repair works on 143 schools with 175 currently being completed.
Bainimarama says every school that is reconstructed is being built to withstand severe weather events and experts have already warned that storms like Cyclone Winston are going to become more frequent and more severe due to catastrophic effects of climate change.
He says that even though it is known that storms like Winston are only going to get worse, many of the Opposition do not share the government’s vision for a more resilient Fiji.
Bainimarama adds that the completion of this new school block sends a strong message to the students that the government cares about their success and are prepared to invest in their future.
He highlights that another $170 million has been allocated towards the reconstruction of schools for the next financial year.
Today, the Prime Minister will be opening 17 new classroom buildings at Dobuilevu Muslim School, Tataiya Primary School and Naseyani Primary School in Ra.
