20% of schools nationwide have abused the grants that were given to them last year.

Minister for Education Doctor Mahendra Reddy revealed this while opening the Northern Schools Management Association Conference at Fiji National University campus in Labasa.

Reddy says the grant is for the purpose of enhancing teaching and learning therefore all management should adhere to the allocation on proper utilization of these grants.

Reddy stresses that the rent for the school leases can also be paid from the Free Education Grant.

The Education Minister says most of the school managements have toiled hard to construct schools and hence they should be given a portion of the grant to ensure they step up in their service delivery.

He says this will assist school managements in their meetings and travels to arrange things for the school.

According to the Ministry of Education, 60% of schools have received their grants for Term 2.

The Ministry is still waiting for the financial and Annual General Meeting report from other schools.
