Life at the Bar or in a law firm is not a bed of roses.
This was highlighted by Chief Justice Anthony Gates during the admission ceremony of 20 new barristers and solicitors at the Suva High Court.
Justice Gates urged the new lawyers to learn to be thorough and not to miss anything.
He says if they are slack and sloppy they will soon have a reputation for making mistakes, and for not being reliable, careful and for not looking after the client’s interests.
Justice Gates added that in the modern world legal practitioners will have to learn the lessons of what it means to be a professional.
He says if lawyers work efficiently and as a true professional they will occasionally enjoy their day in court win or lose, because they were satisfied with their handwork.
He has called on the new solicitors and barristers that as a member of a noble profession and they must conduct themselves in a noble way and must not descent to dishonest and unethical practices.
Justice Gates said they must uphold the Bill of Rights enshrined in the Constitution.
He says achievements bring with it greater responsibility.
